Field crops and grassland 42 million tonnes of cereals harvested in 2021

Farmers in Germany harvested 42 tonnes of cereals (including grain maize and corn cob mix) in 2021 according to final results of the special harvest and quality survey. This was a 2% decline on a year earlier. The yield per hectare was 70.0 decitonnes, which is also nearly 2% lower than in 2020 (71.3 decitonnes).

Production of winter wheat, the main type of grain grown in Germany, amounted to 21.1 million tonnes. This was a decrease of 657,200 tonnes, or 3%, compared with 2020. Winter wheat was cultivated on 2.9 million hectares in 2021 according to final results of the land use survey.

Farmers used roughly 1.5 million hectares to grow barley. The final harvest was 10.4 million tonnes, down 3% from the preceding year (2020: 10.8 million tonnes).

The rye and maslin production amounted to 3.3 million tonnes. This was a decrease by 187,700 tonnes compared with 2020. The production of triticale, a wheat-rye hybrid, was 1.9 million tonnes. There was a decline of 6% on 2020.

The final winter rape harvest was 3.5 million tonnes in 2021, which is roughly the level of the previous year.

Based on the final results from the special harvest and quality survey, the potato production amounted to 11.3 million tonnes, down 3% from 2020. The yield per hectare was 437.9 decitonnes. 258,300 hectares were used for potato production. This is a decrease of 15,200 hectares, or just under 6%, on 2020.
