Europe WhatsApp, Signal & Co: Germanys user rate significantly lower than EU average

Data from the quarter in which the pandemic first started (Q1/2022) shows that 60% of 16- to 74-year-olds in Germany used messenger services such as WhatsApp, Signal and Co. The rate was significantly lower than the EU average (72%). The highest rates were recorded in The Netherlands and Spain (each 92%) and Austria (87%).

In Germany, 48% of 16-74 year-olds were active in social networks. This figure was below the EU average of 58%. Social networks were used particularly often in Denmark (85%), Hungary (79%) and Cyprus (78%).

The latest data can be found in the Eurostat database (messenger services, social networks). For Germany, the data for previous years is not comparable with the recent data due to a redesign of the EU-SILC survey in 2020.
