Press Germany's population stood at 82.5 million at the end of 2016

Population estimated to have reached at least 82.8 million in 2017

WIESBADEN – According to first results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany's total population rose by 346,000 in 2016 on a year earlier (+0.4%) to stand at 82.5 million at the end of the year. In 2015, the increase was significantly higher (978,000 people or +1.2%).

As in the preceding years, the population increase in 2016 was mainly due to immigration, with a surplus of 498,000 people (2015: +1,139,000).
