Press Berlin and Hamburg especially popular among first semester students in 2017

Press release No. 031 of 28 January 2019

WIESBADEN – In academic year 2017, a total 10 Länder recorded positive net migration of first semester students compared with other Länder. This means that the number of young people with a higher education entrance qualification from another Land who in-migrated for taking up a first-degree study course was higher than that of young people with such qualification from the Land concerned out-migrating. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the migration surplus of first semester students was highest in Berlin (just over 4,100) and Hamburg (+3.800). They were followed by Hessen (+2,300) and Sachsen (+2,100).
