WIESBADEN – In 2018, 2,448 accidents involving water-hazardous substances were registered in Germany. In these accidents, 10.3 million litres of pollutants escaped into the environment. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of accidents decreased by roughly 10% compared with the previous year. The volume of water-hazardous substances released declined by 450,000 litres, or 4.2%, from 2017. 3.2 million litres of the pollutants released could not be recovered, used afterwards, or properly disposed of. They did lasting damage.
