WIESBADEN – Staff in hospitals, old-age care and in food retailing are indispensable in the coronavirus crisis. They belong to occupational groups that are deemed systemically important. Based on results of the quarterly survey of earnings, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that full-time skilled hospital staff (e.g. nurses) earned an average gross amount of 3,502 euros per month in 2019. Skilled staff in old people’s homes (e.g. geriatric nurses) earned 3,116 euros and those in food retailing had earnings of 2,186 euros per month. In the total economy (industry and services), the average earnings of skilled personnel amounted to 3,327 euros. There were also significant differences in earnings within the individual branches.
