Press release No. 298 of 7 August 2020
WIESBADEN – In the first six months of 2020, 28.9 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses were slaughtered in commercial slaughterhouses in Germany. The enterprises produced just under 3.9 million tonnes of meat including poultry. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that meat production decreased by roughly 0.6%, or 22,100 tonnes, on the first half of 2019. The reason was the decrease in meat production in the second quarter of 2020, which was characterised by the coronavirus crisis. While production in the first quarter was up 1.4% (+27,600 tonnes) year on year, it was down 2.6% (-49,700) in the second quarter.
