Press Number of visitors at youth hostels and mountain refuges down 82.8% in June 2020 year on year

Press release No. N 052 of 4 September 2020

WIESBADEN – The coming autumn months are traditionally used for school trips so that they are important for the youth hostel and mountain refuge business in Germany. Although schools have returned to ‘normal service’, however, school and study trips over several days have been cancelled beyond the end of 2020 in several Länder due to the corona pandemic. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that youth hostels and mountain refuges recorded a 82.8% decline in the number of visitors in June this year compared with the same month last year. The total number of visitor arrivals was roughly 164,000. In 2019, June was the month with most arrivals of visitors (just over 955,500), followed by September (nearly 895,300). In June 2020, 1,331 youth hostels and mountain refuges all over Germany were open. That was just under 71% of the level reached in June 2019.
