Press release No. 410 of 16 October 2020

WIESBADEN – In 2019 the local units of mining and manufacturing produced 53.4 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this is a share of 13.8% of the gross electricity production by power plants in Germany as recorded by the official statistics agencies (387 billion kilowatt hours). Included are data of power plants from a declared net capacity (electricity) of 1 megawatt; wind and solar power stations are not covered. In 2019, the share of industrial electricity in the gross electricity production was by 1.2 percentage points higher than in 2018. There was an increase of 5.2 percentage points from 2008. In the first place, industrial power plants meet internal demand, but in many instances electricity is supplied to other local units or fed into the public electricity grid.
