WIESBADEN - Since March the coronavirus pandemic has affected life in Germany. Lockdown, home office and social distancing have caused changes in mobility. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this has also impacted the development of traffic accidents. The police recorded at total of roughly 670,000 accidents between March and the end of June 2020. This was a decline of 26% compared with March to June 2019. People were killed or injured in nearly 81,000 accidents, while there was only material damage in roughly 589,000 accidents. The number of accidents involving material damage declined more substantially (-26.6%) than the number of accidents involving personal injury (-21.4%).
