WIESBADEN – The choice of an occupation depends on many factors. It is a known fact, however, that it largely determines the level of future earnings. For example, those who are uncertain whether to start an apprenticeship as a hairdresser or in mechatronics should know that full-time hairdressers earned an average gross 1,813 euros per month in 2018, whereas mechatronics technicians earned an average 3,106 euros, which is almost 1,300 euros more. Within a specific occupation, however, earnings may differ considerably, too. Factors such as economic branch, training and professional experience acquired over the years also play a role. The new interactive salary comparison offered by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) takes account of such factors and thus provides individually tailored information on earnings in specific occupations.
