Press release No. N 002 of 7 January 2021
• At least one working parent in 5 million couple families with children under eleven years
• 581,000 lone parents with children under eleven years were in employment, 41% of them full-time
WIESBADEN – The extension of the lockdown in Germany means that the normal operation of schools and child day care centres will remain suspended in most Länder. Working parents have to juggle work and childcare, which is a huge challenge in particular for parents of younger children and lone parents. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that there were approximately 5 million couple families with children under eleven years in Germany in 2019 where at least one parent was in employment. There were just under 3.2 million families with younger children where both parents worked; they accounted for well over two thirds (68%) of all couple families with children under eleven years.
