WIESBADEN – From the perspective of children and young people, the coronavirus pandemic does not only affect schools and day care centres. The possibilities for leisure and recreation are also seriously limited. The rules of infection control have put a stop to activities that young people could take for granted before the pandemic began: children's camps, sports events, international youth exchange programmes, weekly group meetings or visits to youth cafés. New results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) show that in 2019, the year before the outbreak of the pandemic, just under 156,700 activities of that kind were offered by publicly supported youth work providers throughout Germany. Almost 8.6 million young people participated in them.
