Press release No. 089 of 26 February 2021
WIESBADEN - In 2020, roughly 382,000 pupils in Germany attained the qualification to enter a university or university of applied sciences. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an 8.9% decrease in the number of persons qualified to enter higher education compared with a year earlier (-37,284). This decline was mainly due to the decrease recorded in Niedersachsen where the number of pupils graduating from schools of general education was down by 80.9%. This was the result of returning to a nine-year course of education at grammar schools in the school year 2019/2020, which affected the total of school-leavers with a university entrance qualification in 2020.
