Press release No. 209 of 30 April 2021
WIESBADEN – The settlement and transport area in Germany expanded by an average 52 hectares per day in the four-year period from 2016 to 2019. This is shown by current calculations for the ‘expansion of settlement and transport area’ indicator. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the daily expansion was down by approximately 4 hectares compared with the indicator value of the previous year (56 hectares per day in 2015 to 2018). The aim of the Federal Government is reducing daily average expansion to 30 hectares until 2030 under the German Sustainable Development Strategy. The goal to be attained by 2050 is not to use any additional land for settlement and transport purposes in net terms.
