WIESBADEN – In 2020, roughly 18,600 tonnes of fish were produced in just under 2,300 aquaculture businesses in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of aquaculture businesses declined by slightly more than 200, or 8.7%, compared with 2019. Fish production was almost unchanged; it increased by just under 49 tonnes or 0.3%. The situation was different regarding mussels. After 2019 when mussel production was very high, it declined by 5,900 tonnes to 13,500 tonnes in 2020. This was a decline of roughly 30% on the previous year. The overall production of fish, mussels and other aquaculture products amounted to approximately 32,200 tonnes. This was a decrease of 15% compared with 2019.
