Press Accidents involving water-hazardous substances in 2020 at lowest level since 2010

Decrease mainly due to fewer accidents during transport of water-hazardous substances

Press release No. 438 of 16 September 2021

WIESBADEN – In 2020, 2,023 accidents involving water-hazardous substances were registered in Germany. Compared with the previous year, this was a decrease of 14.0% in the number of accidents, and the lowest level since 2010. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the decrease was mainly due to fewer accidents involving the road, rail, water and air transport of water-hazardous substances. The number of such accidents declined by 17.7% to 1.320 compared with 2019. One of the reasons for this development is probably the decline of goods transport in 2020 during the coronavirus crisis.
