Press release No. 494 of 25 October 2021
WIESBADEN – Irrigation in agriculture is a possible solution strategy to react to rising temperatures and longer periods of drought. Based on final results of the 2020 Census of Agriculture, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that roughly 506,500 hectares of outdoor area in Germany were irrigated in 2019. The irrigated area thus increased by 36% compared with 2009. To what extent areas are irrigated, however, strongly depends on the climatic conditions of the relevant year.
