- Number of students only marginally up after 14 years of notable increases

- Declining number of first semester students due to demographic and pandemic reasons
WIESBADEN – The number of students at German higher education institutions is almost unchanged in the winter semester of 2021/2022 compared with one year earlier. 2,947,500 students are enrolled at higher education institutions in Germany in the current winter semester according to first provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Compared with the winter semester of 2020/2021, the number of students is up slightly by 3,400 (+0.1%). After rising continuously and markedly for 14 years since the winter semester of 2007/2008 (1,941,763 students), the upward trend in student numbers has slowed for the time being.
