WIESBADEN – The coronavirus pandemic markedly affected the educational path of young people in 2020. The rate of transition from school to university reached a record high (almost 48%). 185,000 young people who attained a higher education entrance qualification in the corona year of 2020 began studying at a German institution of higher education in the same year. The Federal Statistical Office also reports that the rate of transition had been 43% in 2019. The current high is mainly due to the pandemic during which it has become much more difficult to start other educational paths, including apprenticeships, voluntary services or work and travel programmes.
