Press In-patient cancer treatments down 6% in 2020

Press release No. N 005 of 3 February 2022

  • Decline smaller than that of total hospital treatments
  • Number of cancer deaths almost unchanged at 231,000
  • Lung and bronchial cancer particularly common
  • One death in three caused by cancer in the age group of 40 to under 80 years

WIESBADEN – Fewer patients were treated for cancer in hospital in 2020 than a year earlier. To coincide with World Cancer Day, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that just under 1.45 million people suffering from cancer were treated in hospital, which is a decline of 6% on 2019 (1.54 million cases). The decrease was thus smaller for cancer treatments than for total hospital treatments (-13% compared with 2019).
