WIESBADEN – For two years, there has been a new vocational training occupation in Germany. Apprentices can train to become generalist nurses entitled to work in geriatric, paediatric and nursing care. Their number totalled 105,006 on reference date 31 December 2021 according to provisional figures. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that 61,458 apprentices started their apprenticeship training in 2021, which was an increase of 7% on 2020. That year, 57,294 apprentices decided to become generalist nurses and, at the end of 2020, 53,610 of them were still on their training course.
