Press Municipalities achieve surplus of 4.6 billion euros in 2021 due to high tax revenue

Higher tax revenue lead to recovery of financial situation of municipalities

WIESBADEN – The municipalities and associations of municipalities (excluding city states) in Germany showed a financial surplus of just under 4.6 billion euros in 2021. In 2020, the surplus achieved by the municipalities totalled 2.0 billion euros. Based on results of quarterly cash statistics, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, following the losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, tax revenue exceeded the pre-crisis level. In 2020, the Federation and the Länder had to support the municipalities by means of the municipal solidarity pact 2020.
