Mussel production up 5.8% on the previous year

WIESBADEN – In 2021, approximately 18,300 tonnes of fish were produced by the roughly 2,200 aquaculture businesses in Germany. This was a year-on-year decline of 1.8%, or 330 tonnes, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The production of mussels, which can fluctuate significantly from year to year because of changing natural conditions, rose by 5.8%, or 780 tonnes, to roughly 14,300 tonnes. The roe and caviar production increased by 11.3%, or 9 tonnes, to approximately 85 tonnes. Total aquaculture production amounted to roughly 32,700 tonnes. This was an increase of 1.4%, or 470 tonnes, compared with 2020.
