WIESBADEN – In 2021, 114,500 of the roughly 50.4 million pigs for fattening that were slaughtered in German slaughterhouses were unfit for human consumption, according to official meat inspection. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this represented approximately 0.2% of the pigs for fattening slaughtered and inspected. The proportion of slaughtered animals that were unfit for consumption remained unchanged from the previous year (2020: 101,200 of the 51.7 million pigs for fattening). The proportion of slaughtered chickens for fattening that were unfit for consumption increased to 2.1% (13.5 million of the 634.4 million chickens for fattening). In the previous year, this proportion stood at 1.7% (10.7 million of the 636.3 million chickens for fattening).
