Press Health expenditure in 2020: financing from government transfers and subsidies rose to 15.7%

Federal subsidies for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the biggest increase since calculations began in 1992

Press release No. 255 of 21 June 2022

WIESBADEN – 67.9 billion euros of current health expenditure was financed from government transfers and subsidies in Germany in 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of 16.3 billion euros, or 31.5%, compared with 2019. As a result, the proportion of government subsidies and transfers was up by 3.0 percentage points year on year, accounting for 15.7% of the 431,8 billion euros of current health expenditure. That was the largest increase in this type of financing since the calculations began in 1992. The reason for the increase in government transfers and subsidies, which include, for example, the annual federal grant to the umbrella health fund and the subsidies from public employers, were direct federal subsidies to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
