Press 22,300 children were harmed in road traffic accidents in 2021

  • Children at risk on the way to school: accidents involving 6 to 14 year olds most often occur between 7:00 and 8:00 hours

WIESBADEN – The number of children involved in road traffic accidents fell to a new historical low in the second year of the pandemic. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that approximately 22,300 children aged under 15 years were harmed in road traffic accidents in 2021. This was a decrease of 0.8% from a year earlier and the lowest level since German reunification. On average, however, a child was injured or killed in a traffic accident every 24 minutes in 2021. Moreover, the number of children killed rose from 48 to 49, compared with the previous year.
