WIESBADEN – In 2021, the German industry consumed 3,918 petajoules of energy. That was an increase of 4.6% from 2020, the first Covid-19 year, and of 2.6% compared with 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the major part was used for energetic purposes (88%), that is, for electricity and heat production. The remaining 12% were used for manufacturing products such as chemicals, fertilisers or plastics. As in the previous years, the main energy sources in industry were natural gas (30%), electricity (21%), coal (16%) as well as mineral oils and mineral oil products (16%).
