  • 32% fewer offers and 49% fewer participants than before the pandemic
  • Event and project attendance figures down by 3.8 million
  • 246,000 fewer volunteers active in youth work than before the crisis (-44%)
  • Number of participants in international youth work fell by 74%

WIESBADEN – The Covid-19 pandemic strongly affected everyday life of young people not only at school and day care centres but also regarding leisure and recreation opportunities. Roughly 4.4 million children, adolescents and young adults in Germany participated in publicly supported youth work offers in the second Covid year 2021. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was only about half as many young people (-49%) as in 2019, the last comparative year before the pandemic. In that year, the number of participants was roughly 8.6 million young people. At the same time, the number of offers - such as holiday camps, group meetings or sport events - fell by roughly one third (-32%) to 106,700. This set of statistics, which was introduced only in 2015 and is produced every two years, thus recorded an all time low in the second Covid year 2021.
