WIESBADEN - Households in Germany spent an average 2,623 euros per month on private consumption in 2021. This was an increase of 4.6%, or 116 euros, compared with 2020 (2,507 euros). Private consumption expenditure thus exceeded the level of 2019 (2,574 euros) after having fallen in 2020, the first Covid-19 year. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on the continuous household budget surveys. In 2021, households spent more money in all areas except transport than a year earlier. In some areas, however, spending remained below pre-pandemic levels. Total household final consumption expenditure increased somewhat more in 2021 than consumer prices, which were up by an annual average of 3.1% in 2021 compared with 2020.
