WIESBADEN – Research and development expenditure reached a new all-time high in Germany in 2021. They rose by 5.6% to 112.6 billion euros compared with the previous year, as is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional results. The trend of rising research and development expenditure observed for many years is thus continuing. It was interrupted only in the Covid year 2020, when expenditure fell by 3.4 billion euros (-3.1%) to 106.6 billion euros. These figures include total expenditure for research and development at public and publicly supported institutions, higher education institutions and business.
