Press Household final consumption expenditure up 3.4% in 2022

Press release No. 106 of 15 March 2023

  • Final consumption expenditure of households marked by inflation in 2022
  • Increases in electricity and gas prices resulted in higher expenditure despite lower consumption
  • Year-on-year savings ratio decreased by just under 4 percentage points

WIESBADEN - The consumption behaviour of households in Germany was strongly affected by high inflation in 2022. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that, based on the national accounts concepts, household final consumption expenditure in the domestic territory measured at current prices rose by 10.7% compared with the previous year. In contrast, the price adjusted household final consumption expenditure in the domestic territory was 3.4% higher than a year earlier. The difference between the two figures reflects the high price increases for households.
