Press Municipalities achieving surplus of 2.6 billion euros in 2022 despite substantially higher expenditure

Higher tax revenue still contributing to recovery of municipalities’ financial situation

WIESBADEN – The municipalities and associations of municipalities (excluding city states) in Germany showed a financial surplus of just under 2.6 billion euros in 2022. In 2021, the surplus achieved by the municipalities totalled 4.6 billion euros. Based on results of quarterly cash statistics, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that there were again higher tax revenues along with strongly rising personnel and non-personnel expenditures.
