Press release No. 152 of 18 April 2023

  • Number of building permits for dwellings down 23.4% in January and February compared with the same period a year earlier
  • Building permits for new construction issued in January and February 2023: -28.4% for single-family houses, -52.4% for two-family houses, -23.0% for multi-family houses

WIESBADEN - In February 2023, the construction of 22,300 dwellings was permitted in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a decrease of 5,800 building permits, or 20.6%, compared with February 2022. Consequently, the number of building permits has decreased each month since May 2022. Since October 2022, the decline has amounted to more than 10% in each month. From January to February 2023, a total of 44,200 building permits for dwellings were issued, which was a drop of 23.4% compared with the same period a year earlier (January to February 2022: 57.700 building permits). Assumedly, the decline in building projects was still mainly due to high costs of building material and worsening financing conditions. The results include building permits for both dwellings in new buildings and new dwellings in existing buildings.
