WIESBADEN – The selling prices in wholesale trade were 0.1% higher in December 2024 than in December 2023. Compared with the same month a year earlier, the rate of change was -0.6% in November 2024, and -0.8% in October 2024. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that wholesale prices in December 2024 also rose by 0.1% on November 2024.

Higher prices for non-ferrous ores, non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous semi-finished metal products, and for coffee, tea, cocoa and spices

The main reason for the year-on-year increase in wholesale prices (total) in December 2024 were higher prices in the wholesale of non-ferrous ores, non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous semi-finished metal products (+22.3%).

Coffee, tea, cocoa and spices were also considerably more expensive at the wholesale level (+34.3%), as were sugar, confectionery and bakery products (+11.0%) and milk, milk products, eggs, edible fats and oils (+5.7%).

On the other hand, prices in December 2024 were lower than in December 2023 in the wholesale of computers and peripheral equipment (-6.0%) and in the wholesale of mineral oil products (-6.0% compared with December 2023, but +0.3% on November 2024).

The wholesale prices for iron, steel and ferrous semi-finished metal products were also lower than in December 2023 (-4.9%).

Wholesale prices down 1.3% on an annual average in 2024

On an annual average in 2024, wholesale selling prices fell by 1.3% compared with 2023. In 2023, they were 0.6% higher than a year earlier, and in 2022 they exceeded the previous year's prices by 17.2%. In particular, the drop in prices in the wholesale of mineral oil products (-5.4%) had a considerable impact on the change on the previous year.

Significantly lower prices were also reported in the wholesale of iron, steel and ferrous semi-finished metal products (-10.0%) and in the wholesale of grain, unmanufactured tobacco, seeds and animal feeds (-8.6%). Live animals were also less expensive at the wholesale level in 2024 than in 2023 (-4.0%).

By contrast, the wholesale prices particularly of coffee, tea, cocoa and spices were higher (+15.6%) on an annual average in 2024 than in 2023. Non-ferrous ores, non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous semi-finished metal products were also more expensive on an annual average than in 2023 (+11.8%), as were sugar, confectionery and bakery products (+8.4%).
