WIESBADEN – Germany exported goods to the value of 109.1 billion euros and imported goods to the value of 89.4 billion euros in May 2018. Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that German exports declined by 1.3%, while imports increased by 0.8% in May 2018 year on year. After calendar and seasonal adjustment, exports increased by 1.8% and imports by 0.7% compared with April 2018.
The foreign trade balance showed a surplus of 19.7 billion euros in May 2018. In May 2017, the surplus amounted to 21.8 billion euros. In calendar and seasonally adjusted terms, the foreign trade balance recorded a surplus of 20.3 billion euros in May 2018.
According to provisional results of the Deutsche Bundesbank, the current account of the balance of payments showed a surplus of 12.6 billion euros in May 2018, which takes into account the balances of trade in goods including supplementary trade items (+21.5 billion euros), services (–1.6 billion euros), primary income (–7.4 billion euros) and secondary income (+0.1 billion euros). In May 2017, the German current account showed a surplus of 15.2 billion euros.
In May 2018, Germany exported goods to the value of 65.7 billion euros to the Member States of the European Union (EU), while it imported goods to the value of 51.8 billion euros from those countries. Compared with May 2017, exports to the EU countries increased by 2.4%, and imports from those countries by 2.9%. Goods to the value of 40.8 billion euros (+0.1%) were dispatched to the Euro area countries in May 2018, while the value of the goods received from those countries was 32.9 billion euros (+0.6%). In May 2018, goods to the value of 24.9 billion euros (+6.5%) were dispatched to EU countries not belonging to the Euro area, while the value of the goods which arrived from those countries was 18.9 billion euros (+7.0%).
Exports of goods to countries outside the European Union (third countries) amounted to 43.4 billion euros in May 2018, while imports from those countries totalled 37.6 billion euros. Compared with May 2017, exports to third countries decreased by 6.4% and imports from those countries by 1.9%.
