German Presidency of the Council Working Party on Statistics Lessons Learned from COVID-19 – Short-term Data Requirements for Long-term Decision-making

Live panel discussion on 27 November 2020

Germany took over the Presidency of the Council on 1 July 2020. In the same context, Destatis took over the chairmanship of the Council Working Party on Statistics.

As part of the German EU Council Presidency, Destatis would like to use the public focus and address the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on decision making. Therefore, Destatis hosted in cooperation with Eurostat a virtual panel on 27 November 2020.

The European panel of experts engaged in a discussion on data requirements in the economic and financial field in the context of the Corona pandemic. State Secretary Dr. Markus Richter (Federal Ministry of the Interior) opened the event with a video message about data driven decision and innovative data editing in Germany and Europe.

He was followed by a keynote from Mariana Kotzeva, Director-General of Eurostat on priorities in favour of data users, new data strategies and common Covid-19 crisis response. The panel under the moderation of Stefan Schweinfest drew the conclusion from the discussion that the official statistic is on a very good path. The “Dashboard Deutschland” and the “ESS Recovery Dashboard for Europe, which will be published in December, contribute to further increasing the relevance of official statistics and help to satisfy the user needs even better than today.
