More about Ulrich Rendtel

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Rendtel is an emeritus professor of Statistics at the Department of Economics of the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin. His research areas include survey statistics, particularly panel surveys, and the handling of nonresponse and measurement errors. He has conducted many research projects in collaboration with official statistics. Ulrich Rendtel supervises the “European Master of Official Statistics (EMOS)” program at FU Berlin. In the context of data anonymization, he has advocated for a paradigm shift from potential data attackers to certified researchers. Additionally, he has developed alternative representations of geographic maps that deviate from the conventional method of uniformly shaded areas used in official statistics, allowing for smooth representations independent of predefined area systems, as seen in Gross et al. (2017), Gross et al. (2020), and Erfurth et al. (2022). In relation to the AnigeD research cluster, the use of the area aggregates employed here is likely the most commonly used method for anonymizing georeferenced data. This method is intended to be extended to other anonymization techniques such as geomasking.
