WIESBADEN – The highest municipal per capita debt on 31 December 2016 was recorded in the municipalities of the Saarland (6,894 euros), followed by those of Hessen (5,353 euros) and Nordrhein-Westfalen (4,594 euros). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the average per capita debt was lowest in the municipalities of Bayern (2,295 euros), Schleswig-Holstein (2,562 euros) and Sachsen (2,636 euros). On average, total municipal per capita debt in Germany was 3,509 euros. All debt owed to the non-public sector was considered. The calculation of the results included all publicly controlled direct and indirect stakes of the municipalities in Germany.
