Press Stepfathers and stepmothers account for 63% of all adoptions

  • Marked increase in adoptions of stepchildren aged under three years
  • Applications for adoption down 40% compared with ten years ago

WIESBADEN – In 2019, 63% of the 3,744 adopted children were adopted by their stepfather or stepmother, that is, by the new spouse of the legal parent. The proportion of adoptions of stepchildren continued to increase over time. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the respective share amounted to 52% ten years earlier. However, the total of adoptions declined by 144 cases (-3.7%) compared with ten years ago.
