- In 2020 sales of pipe tobacco and fine cut tobacco increased by 44.3% and 10.6%, respectively, compared with a year earlier
- Cigarette sales declined slightly by 1.1% on 2019
- Overall, tax was paid on tobacco products to the value of 28.8 billion euros, which was a 5% increase on the previous year
WIESBADEN - In the corona year of 2020, sales of cigarettes in Germany were down 1.1%, while sales of pipe and fine cut tobacco increased substantially compared with 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the quantity of pipe tobacco taxed increased by 44.3% year on year. The quantity of fine cut tobacco taxed was also up by 10.6%. Sales of cigars and cigarillos increased by 3.7%. Overall, tax was paid on tobacco products to the value of 28.8 billion euros in 2020. That was an increase of roughly 1.4 billion euros, or 5.0%, compared with 2019.
