Press release No. 447 of 22 September 2021
WIESBADEN – Late frosts, heavy rainfalls and storms have destroyed the hope of Germany’s tree fruit growers for at least average cherry yields in many places. Based on estimates, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that a total 38,400 tonnes of cherries were harvested in 2021 as at reference date 20 August 2021. This means that cherry yields were down by 23.2% on the previous year (50,000 tonnes) and by 19.9% compared with the ten-year average from 2011 to 2020 (47,900 tonnes). First provisional estimates as at reference date 10 June 2021 suggested a much more moderate decline of 4.4% compared with the ten-year average.
