- 4% more household waste generated in 2020 compared with 2019
- 476 kilograms of waste collected per capita
- Above-average increase of recyclables and biowaste in relation to total waste generated
WIESBADEN – The volume of waste produced by households in Germany rose considerably in the Covid year of 2020. According to provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 39.6 million tonnes of waste were collected from households.That was an increase of 1.6 million tonnes, or 4%, compared with 2019. The per capita volume of household waste was up by 19 kilograms, from 457 to 476 kilograms. There were increases in all categories, especially with recyclables, which include paper, cardboard and plastics, and biowaste. For comparison: in 2019, the volume of household waste generated per capita merely rose by just under 3 kilograms from 2018.
