WIESBADEN – Roughly 45.7 million persons resident in Germany were in employment in June 2023. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment declined slightly by 1,000 (0.0%) compared with the previous month. Employment had risen every month up to May 2023, but the pace had slowed in recent months (+16,000 people in May 2023).

Without seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment in June 2023 rose by 11,000, or 0.0%, on May 2023. Therefore, the increase was much smaller than in June 2022 (+36,000).

Year-on-year comparison shows upward trend at slightly slower pace

Compared with June 2022, the number of persons in employment was up 0.7%, or 305,000, in June 2023. In May 2023, the year-on-year rate of change also stood at +0.7% (+330,000 people), after +1.0% in January 2023 (+433,000 people). A year-on-year comparison shows that the long-term upward trend on the labour market continued in June 2023, but at a slower pace.

Seasonally adjusted employment in the 2nd quarter of 2023 up 0.1% from the previous quarter

According to provisional calculations, the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany (domestic concept) averaged roughly 45.9 million in the second quarter of 2023. The number of persons in employment therefore was up a seasonally adjusted 67,000, or 0.1%, on the previous quarter. Detailed results for the second quarter of 2023 will be released on 17 August 2023.

Adjusted unemployment rate unchanged at 3.0% in June 2023

According to results of the labour force survey, 1.38 million people were unemployed in June 2023. This represented an increase of 119,000, or 9.5%, compared with June 2022. The unemployment rate rose to 3.1% (June 2022: 2.9%).

Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed stood at 1.33 million, which was an increase of 2,000 people, or 0.1%, on May 2023. Compared with the previous month, the adjusted unemployment rate remained stable at 3.0% in June 2023.
