28 August 2026 Employment in July 2026 down slightly on the previous month after seasonal adjustment

Roughly 45.48 million persons resident in Germany (national concept) were in employment in July 2026. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment therefore fell slightly by 13,000 (0.0%) compared with the previous month. In the period from January to June 2026, employment decreased by an average of 19,000 people month on month.

Structures of the German labour market in the light of the COVID-19-pandemic

The measures introduced in Germany to push back the COVID-19-pandemic have also lead to a significant reduction of economic activities and consequently have effects on the labour market. For persons in employment this can mean reduced working times, slack work (“Kurzarbeit”), or even the loss of employment. On the other side, persons working in so called “essential jobs” might even experience substantially more working hours and a higher work strain.

The place of employment is where they spend many hours a day – often more time than is available for their families, friends and leisure activities. Experimental statistics

In the "EXSTAT – Experimental statistics section" we regularly publish new and innovative project results of the Federal Statistical Office. These are obtained by using new data sources and methods. Both the degree of maturity and quality of the results differ from those of official statistics, especially regarding harmonisation, coverage and methodology. Nonetheless these results of the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder offer new and interesting ways of looking at various statistical topics.

Pendler Mobil: the use of mobile network data to support official commuter statistics

1 September 2022 - The project Pendler Mobil examined possibilities of extending the official commuter accounts using origin-destination matrices derived from mobile network data. On account of their timeliness and high level of regional detail, mobile network data provide a robust data basis for a flexible presentation of potential and regular commuter flows.
