The statistics of deaths supply the basic demographic information for assessing the mortality situation, life expectancy and the ageing of the population. Thus they provide fundamental data on living conditions.
Death statistics are produced from a compulsory complete count. They are based on reports from the registrar in whose district the death has taken place.
The period life tables of official statistics are based on data on the people deceased and on the average population of the last three years. A life table is a demographic model allowing a summarising assessment of a population’s mortality situation irrespective of its size and age structure.
