1 July 2026 Total fertility rate drops to 1.32 children per woman in 2025

At 1.32 children per woman, the total fertility rate (TFR) in Germany in 2025 was 2.7% lower than in the previous year (1.35 births per woman). The total fertility rate has therefore been declining steadily since 2022. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the last time the fertility rate reached a similar low was roughly 20 years ago, when it stood at 1.33 children per woman in 2006. It was even lower in the mid-1990s, with an all-time low of 1.24 children per woman. Those born at that time currently form the relatively small generation of potential parents. As a result of this development, the number of births in 2025 dropped to the lowest post-war level recorded. According to final results, 654,241 children were born in Germany in 2025.
